Converted from disused public toilets and shelter, the Admiral Benbow first opened its doors in early 1997. Since opening, the bar has had only two owners. Rob Turner was the first and was responsible for the actual conversion. In 1994 the bar was purchased by the present owner Paul Hibbert-Greaves. Since then the bar has been subtlety altered inside with an eye on keeping the ambience intact. Outside, a temporary wood and scaffold deck was altered to represent a pirate ship (The Hispaniola). Time took its toll and in 2013 the entire structure was replaced by two members of the bar staff and friends.

The Admiral Benbow was built using reclaimed timber from the groynes and breakwaters that where removed from the beach. The wood is so hard it is almost impossible to push in a drawing pin!
Inside the bar you will find nautical souvenirs from all around the world a lot of which have been donated by our customers. Look out for piranhas, sharks, blowfish, model boats and much much more! On the ceiling you will find beer clips representing all of the real ales that have been on sale.
We like to think that we are the most dog friendly bar around (See doggy page) and often have special days for your pets.
So if you are walking along the promenade and the flag is flying, come on in and receive a warm Benbow welcome.
